Summer in March

After skiing for 8 days, we took a few days break and drove to Colorado Springs to visit our friends Blaise & Elizabeth and their kids Caroline & Joe. It was warm in the mountains when we left (upper 40's) and downright hot in the Front Range (mid 70's).

We spent most of one day driving around the Springs, becoming even more familiar with neighborhoods that we might be interested in living in. We saw several interesting homes for sale (from the outside). That afternoon we went to Bear Creek Park and walked up a closed road -- the same one we were on with Elizabeth last summer, hiking in the rain.

The bottom part of the road is more canyon-like with lots of cool rocks.

It opens up the higher you go. Here's a view looking back toward the city (that flat area on the left).

The next day went to the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo. Neither of us had been to a zoo in years. This a pretty small zoo, but with very interesting topography since it's built into the side of a mountain. We both enjoyed the day immensely. The giraffes were a big hit, since you could get as close as you dared, and could feed them Wasa crackers (3 for $1).

The mountain lions were also especially cool. The viewing area is actually below the surface of their pen, with plexiglass in the wall and ceiling.

Our third day in Colorado Springs, Anna's brother drove down from Denver to meet us for lunch. Afterward we walked around Garden of the Gods. It was warm but incredibly windy.
